Adderall XR Drug Interactions
Adderall XR drug interactions with other medications, such as certain antacids, certain sleep medications, and MAO inhibitors, can lead to problems. Some of these drug interactions can increase or decrease the amount of Adderall XR in your blood, potentially leading to side effects. Some of these interactions can also lead to life-threatening side effects. Therefore, be sure to talk to your healthcare provider about any Adderall XR drug interactions that may apply to you.
Adderall XR® (amphetamine-dextroamphetamine extended release) can potentially interact with many drugs. Some of the drugs that may lead to Adderall XR interactions include:
- Acetazolamide (Diamox®)
- Ammonium chloride
- Certain antacids, such as sodium bicarbonate or calcium carbonate (Tums®)
- Certain sleep medications, such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl®, Tylenol PM®)
- Chlorpromazine (Thorazine®)
- Ethosuximide (Zarontin®)
- Haloperidol (Haldol®)
- Lithium (Eskalith®, Lithobid®, Lithonate®)
- Medications for high blood pressure (see Blood Pressure Medication)
- Meperidine (Demerol®)
- Methenamine (Hiprex®, Urex®)
- MAO inhibitors, such as:
- Phenelzine (Nardil®)
- Tranylcypromine (Parnate®)
- Selegiline (Eldepryl®, Emsam®, Zelapar®)
- Isocarboxazid (Marplan®)
- Norepinephrine (Levophed®)
- Phenobarbital (Luminal®)
- Phenytoin (Dilantin®)
- Propoxyphene (Darvocet®, Darvon®)
- Reserpine
- Tricyclic antidepressants, including:
- Amitriptyline (Elavil®)
- Clomipramine (Anafranil®)
- Doxepin (Sinequan®, Silenor®)
- Imipramine (Tofranil®)
- Desipramine (Norpramin®)
- Nortriptyline (Pamelor®)
- Protriptyline (Vivactil®).
Several herbal and nutritional supplements can also interact with Adderall XR. Examples of these include, but are not limited to:
