Attention deficit disorder (
ADD) is one of the most frequently occurring childhood psychiatric disorders. Also known as ADHD, symptoms include an inability to stay focused on a task, having trouble sitting still, and acting without thinking. These symptoms usually become evident in preschool or early elementary years, and can continue into adolescence and even adulthood. There are three types: the predominantly inattentive type, the predominantly hyperactive-impulsive type, and the combined type. In many cases, the most effective treatments for attention deficit disorder include medications and behavioral therapies. Although the majority of children with the disorder rarely outgrow it, some find ways to cope with the condition as they mature.
