Concerta Usage

Concerta® (methylphenidate extended release) is a medication often prescribed to help improve symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It is a stimulant designed to be released slowly throughout the day. Concerta usage is approved for children, teenagers, and adults up to 65 years of age.

Although stimulants can cause hyperactivity, Concerta has a calming effect. Scientists are unclear how the drug works to produce this effect, but it is known to affect certain chemicals in the brain.

Occasionally, healthcare providers may recommend the drug "off-label" for treating other conditions. Some of these possible off-label Concerta uses include treatment of narcolepsy and depression. The medicine can also be used off-label to help with weight loss.
