Generic Daytrana

Although a number of companies claim to sell "generic Daytrana" on the Internet, there is no generic version of Daytrana currently available. So-called "generic Daytrana" products from these sources are fake, substandard, and potentially dangerous. The earliest a genuine generic version of Daytrana could be available is in 2012, when the first patent protecting the medication expires. While methylphenidate is the active ingredient in Daytrana (and several other medications), it is not a generic form of Daytrana.

Generic Daytrana: An Overview

Daytrana™ (methylphenidate patch) is a prescription medication that has been licensed to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Daytrana is a stimulant, although it has effects that are opposite from what would be expected of a stimulant. While stimulants (like caffeine) can cause hyperactivity, Daytrana has a calming effect when used at the proper doses.

Daytrana is manufactured by Shire Pharmaceuticals. The medication is currently protected by a patent that prevents any generic Daytrana from being manufactured. Yet, if you search the Internet for "generic Daytrana," you may find a number of companies selling it. The fact is, these medicines are fake, substandard, and potentially dangerous. You should not buy any generic Daytrana until there is an approved generic available.

When Will There Be a Generic Daytrana?

The first patent for Daytrana currently expires in 2012. This is the earliest date that a generic version of the medicine could become available. However, there are other circumstances that could come up to extend the exclusivity period of Daytrana beyond 2012. This could include such things as other patents for specific Daytrana uses or lawsuits. Once the medication goes off patent, there may be several companies that will begin manufacturing a generic Daytrana drug.
