A healthcare provider may prescribe Desoxyn
® (
methamphetamine hydrochloride) oral capsules to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (
ADHD) or obesity. This prescription medication is a type of stimulant, although it has effects that are opposite from what would be expected of a stimulant. While stimulants (like caffeine) can cause hyperactivity, Desoxyn can have a calming effect when used in the doses for ADHD treatment. However, when used in the doses to treat obesity, Desoxyn works in at least two ways. It works as an appetite suppressant and also helps to increase the metabolism.
Although most people tolerate this medication well, it is not suitable for everyone. Before starting treatment with Desoxyn, make sure to talk to your healthcare provider about any other medical conditions you may have or any other medications you are taking (including vitamins and herbal supplements). Some of the common side effects of this medication include
headaches,
insomnia, and restlessness.
Desoxyn oral tablets come in only one strength -- Desoxyn 5 mg -- and are typically taken once or twice a day by mouth. Your individual dosage will vary, based on factors such as other medications you are currently taking and other medical conditions you may have.
