Generic Dexedrine: An Overview
Dexedrine® (
dextroamphetamine sulfate) is a prescription medication that is used for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (
ADHD). It is also used to treat
narcolepsy. Dexedrine comes in two forms: tablets and Spansules
®.
Dexedrine Spansules are specially designed to release the medication slowly over time. Because Spansules release the medication slowly over time, they can be taken just once a day, eliminating the need to take the medication at school or work.
Dexedrine was originally manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline. However, it has since come off patent and is now available as a generic. Interestingly, brand-name Dexedrine tablets are also made by another company (Shire Richwood Inc.) under a different name: Dextrostat® tablets. Dextrostat tablets are equivalent to Dexedrine tablets.
Generic Dexedrine is currently sold as Dextroamphetamine Sulfate tablets and Dextroamphetamine Sulfate Extended Release capsules.
