Although it is a stimulant, the prescription drug Focalin® has a calming effect when used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In clinical studies, children and teenagers with ADHD who took Focalin had significant improvement in their symptoms, compared to children and teenagers with ADHD who did not take the medicine. Focalin comes in tablet form and is typically taken twice a day. Reported side effects include nausea, fever, and decreased appetite.
