Adderall® (amphetamine and dextroamphetamine) is a prescription medication used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. This medication is a type of stimulant, although it has effects that are opposite from what would be expected of a stimulant. While stimulants (like caffeine) can cause hyperactivity, Adderall can have a calming effect. Although it is not exactly known as to how this medication produces a calming effect, it is known that it affects chemicals in the brain.
Although most people tolerate it well, side effects are possible. Some of the common side effects include difficulty sleeping, headaches, and weight loss.
Adderall tablets are typically taken twice a day, although some people (especially those using it for narcolepsy) will need to take it more often. The dosage your healthcare provider recommends will vary, based on factors such as other medications you are currently taking, other medical conditions you may have, your age, and other ADHD or narcolepsy medications you have tried. Adderall tablets are available in seven strengths:
- Adderall 5 mg
- Adderall 7.5 mg
- Adderall 10 mg
- Adderall 12.5 mg
- Adderall 15 mg
- Adderall 20 mg
- Adderall 30 mg.
