Take Care of Yourself

Parenting a child with ADHD can be stressful and overwhelming. It is easy to focus most of your energy on caring for your child. However, it is important to remember to set aside time to care for yourself. Taking care of yourself will help you face the challenges that come with ADHD. Some of the ways you can care for yourself include:
  • Taking breaks when you need them. Give yourself permission to spend a few hours away from your child.
  • Asking for help when you need it. For example, consider asking family or friends to provide respite care on occasion.
  • Nurturing your relationships. Spend time with your spouse or significant other and other loved ones. Siblings may sometimes feel neglected if most of the attention seems to be directed toward the child with ADHD. Set aside special time for all the children in the household.
  • Connecting with other families. A variety of support groups are available for children with ADHD and their families. These support groups connect families who understand the challenges that come with living with ADHD. Support groups provide an environment for sharing challenges, successes, strategies, and resources.

Overcoming ADHD is not easy, but it is possible. Although there is no cure, there are treatments and strategies that can help reduce symptoms and make the condition more manageable. Talk openly with your child's healthcare provider. He or she can provide you with more information and additional resources to help you find the strategies that work best for you, your child, and your family.
