Daytrana for Depression Treatment

Stimulants like Daytrana are also sometimes used to treat depression. Although not approved for this use, stimulants like the medication contained in Daytrana can help to rapidly improve depression symptoms. Using the medication to treat depression is an "off-label use" of Daytrana. This means that Daytrana has not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat depression.
Although the FDA regulates how a medication can be advertised or promoted by the manufacturer, these regulations do not restrict a doctor's ability to prescribe the medication for different conditions, in different doses, or for different lengths of time. The practice of prescribing medications for periods of time or for conditions not FDA-approved is known as "off-label" use of such medications. Your healthcare provider will prescribe a medicine for off-label use when he or she feels that the medicine is appropriate for your situation.
While such use often occurs in the treatment of many conditions, you should feel comfortable about asking your doctor if he or she is using a medication or combination of medications in a manner that is not approved by the FDA.

Daytrana and Depression: A Summary

Even though Daytrana is sometimes used off-label to treat depression, depression has been reported as a possible side effect of medications containing the same active ingredient as Daytrana. Therefore, for people taking Daytrana (or their family members), it is important to know the signs and symptoms of depression. If you or your child experience symptoms of depression while taking Daytrana or something "just does not seem right," you should talk to your healthcare provider right away. He or she should be able to diagnose the problem and recommend treatment options.
