ADHD Home > Daytrana Uses

In the case of Daytrana, uses of the medication include the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and adolescents. The medicine, which is licensed to treat children six years old and older, has not been approved for use in adults. However, it may be used off-label to treat adults with ADHD. Other examples of off-label Daytrana uses include weight loss and the treatment of narcolepsy.

Daytrana Uses: An Overview

Daytrana™ (methylphenidate patch) is a prescription medicine that has been licensed to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

ADHD is a condition involving difficulty paying attention, sitting still, and controlling behavior. In children with ADHD, these problems are worse than expected for a typical child of the same age. Usually, the ADHD symptoms must be present before the age of seven to qualify as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The symptoms must also affect a person's school, work, or social life in a negative way to qualify as ADHD (see ADHD and School and Relationships and ADHD for more information).

Although ADHD is generally thought of as a problem in children, teenagers and adults can also have the condition.

Daytrana has been shown in clinical trials to help children and adolescents (up to age 17) with ADHD. The medication can help them sit still and pay attention in the classroom and improve behavior. Daytrana is not approved for use in adults (see Daytrana for Adults and Teens and Adult ADHD).

Any behavioral change involves a well-balanced ADHD treatment plan, including social, educational, and mental therapy (see Behavior Therapy for ADHD). If lifestyle changes alone are not effective in changing behavior in people with the condition, ADHD medications (such as Daytrana) may be necessary.
