ADHD Home > Generic Desoxyn

Although the patent for brand-name Desoxyn expired long ago, it is only now that a generic version is available on the market. Generic Desoxyn is produced by Mylan, Inc., and comes in a 5-mg strength. The FDA has given the generic version an "AB" rating, meaning it is considered equivalent to brand-name Desoxyn.

Generic for Desoxyn: An Overview

Most people think of methamphetamine as an illegal street drug, but it is also a prescription medication. Desoxyn® (methamphetamine hydrochloride) is a prescription medication that has been licensed to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It is also approved for the short-term treatment of obesity.
Desoxyn is manufactured by Ovation Pharmaceuticals. The patent for Desoxyn has long expired, but the medication has only recently become available in generic form. A generic version of Desoxyn was approved in April 2010.

Generic Desoxyn Availability

Generic Desoxyn is made by Mylan, Inc. Like brand-name Desoxyn, it comes in only one strength: Methamphetamine 5-mg tablets. Your pharmacy may or may not carry generic Desoxyn (or brand-name Desoxyn), because it is not a commonly prescribed medication.

Is Generic Methamphetamine as Good as Desoxyn?

All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns a rating to each one.
An "AB" rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication. Mylan's generic methamphetamine has an "AB" rating, meaning it should be equivalent to Desoxyn.
However, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients than the brand-name medication. This might include fillers, dyes, or other ingredients that may cause problems for people with allergies or sensitivities.
