ADHD Home > Ritalin SR

Ritalin SR is prescribed to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. The medicine has two functions -- it can help people with narcolepsy stay awake during the day, but it can also produce a calming effect in children with ADHD. The drug, which comes in tablet form, only needs to be taken once a day. Potential side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, or loss of appetite.

What Is Ritalin SR?

Ritalin SR® (methylphenidate extended-release) is a prescription medication used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It is also used to treat narcolepsy.

Because Ritalin SR is a stimulant and is commonly abused, there are special rules for prescribing the medication (see Ritalin Abuse and Ritalin: A Controlled Substance for more information).

Who Makes It?

Ritalin SR is manufactured by Novartis Pharmaceuticals. A generic version of the drug is made by several different manufacturers.

What Is Ritalin SR Used For?

As mentioned, Ritalin SR is licensed to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD for short. In addition to hyperactivity (having trouble sitting still), people with the condition have problems paying attention, focusing, and controlling their behavior. While most people think of ADHD as a problem in children, it can also occur in adults (see Adult ADHD). However, Ritalin SR is not approved for use in adults (see Ritalin SR for Adults).

This medication is also licensed for the treatment of narcolepsy. This is a condition that involves falling asleep uncontrollably and at unusual times. People who have symptoms of narcolepsy often appear paralyzed when they are asleep and have hallucinations when falling asleep. People with the condition often fall asleep several times during the day.
