Metadate and Weight Loss

Side effects are possible with Metadate, and weight loss is one of the most common. While some people may not consider this a negative side effect, it can be problem for growing children. On occasion, the drug may also be prescribed as an "off-label" weight loss medicine. However, if your child is taking Metadate and weight loss occurs that is unwanted, contact your healthcare provider. Another ADHD medication may be prescribed.

Metadate and Weight Loss: An Overview

Metadate ER^® (methylphenidate extended-release) is a prescription medication that is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. Metadate CD^® (methylphenidate extended-release) is a longer-acting version licensed to treat ADHD. A number of side effects are possible with stimulants like Metadate, and weight loss appears to be one of the most common.

For some people, this may be a good thing. Healthcare providers do, on occasion, prescribe stimulants for weight loss. For other people, however, unintended weight loss can be a problem. For example, weight loss can be a problem in growing children. Using Metadate for weight loss can also be a problem if the medicine is abused. In fact, losing weight is one of the reasons why so many people abuse the drug (see Metadate Abuse).

Dealing With Metadate Weight Loss in Children and Teenagers

Weight loss is a common side effect of stimulants such as Metadate, although the exact percentage of people who experience this side effect while taking the medicine is unknown. Although weight loss may be a desirable side effect for some children and teens, too much weight loss can be a problem for growing bodies. If your child or teenager seems to be losing too much weight, talk to your healthcare provider. There are other ADHD medications that may not cause these problems for your child.
