When and How to Take Phenelzine

Considerations for when and how to take phenelzine include the following:
 
  • Phenelzine comes in tablet form. It is taken by mouth, usually three times a day.
     
  • You can take the medication with or without food. If it upsets your stomach, try taking it with food.
     
  • Phenelzine should be taken at the same times each day to maintain an even level in your blood.
     
  • For the drug to work properly, you have to take it as prescribed. Phenelzine will not work if you stop taking it.
     

Dosage Information for Phenelzine

The dose of phenelzine that your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:
 
  • Your age
  • Other medical conditions you may have
  • Other medications you may currently be taking.
     
As with any medication, do not adjust your phenelzine dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Phenelzine Side Effects

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with phenelzine. However, not everyone who takes the medication will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, they are often minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by your healthcare provider. Serious side effects are less common.
