Quillivant XR Uses

The stimulant Quillivant XR is used mainly to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children as young as six years old and adults. It can help people stay more focused, and reduce hyperactive and impulsive behaviors. There are also a few off-label (unapproved) uses for Quillivant XR, such as treating narcolepsy or depression.

What Is Quillivant XR Used For?

Quillivant XR™ (methylphenidate ER oral suspension) is a prescription medication approved for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, more commonly referred to as ADHD. It is a stimulant medicine that comes in the form of an extended-release liquid, taken once a day in the morning.

Like many other ADHD medications, Quillivant XR is not specifically approved for use in adults. It has been studied for effectiveness in children ages 6 to 12 years old. However, even without a specific approval, it can still be used in adults.

ADHD is a common childhood attention disorder associated with hyperactivity, trouble paying attention, and difficulty controlling impulsive behaviors (see ADHD Symptoms). While all children may be hyperactive, inattentive, and impulsive from time to time, for children with ADHD the problems are worse than expected for a typical child of the same age. Some children may outgrow their ADHD symptoms; however, many will continue to have ADHD into adulthood.

ADHD can have a negative impact on a child's social relationships (see Relationships and ADHD) and school or work performance. If not adequately treated, children with ADHD may struggle with low self-image, depression (see ADHD and Depression), and other emotional problems.

There is currently no cure for ADHD. However, treatment can help reduce symptoms and greatly improve the long-term outcomes of the condition. Treatment may include medications, various types of behavioral therapy and counseling (see Behavior Therapy for ADHD), or a combination of these options.

Quillivant XR can improve the symptoms of ADHD. It can help people with ADHD stay more focused, and reduce hyperactive and impulsive behaviors. It is an extended-release medicine, which means it is slowly released into the body throughout the day. This is the reason it only needs to be taken once a day.

Quillivant XR is usually taken in the morning. Once taken, the medicine begins to work in about 45 minutes, and continues working for up to 12 hours.
