Ritalin LA Uses

Ritalin LA uses are primarily limited to the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Although this extended-release medication is only licensed to treat children ages six and older, it may be used in an off-label fashion to treat adults and teens with ADHD. Other potential off-label Ritalin LA uses include the treatment of narcolepsy and weight loss.

An Overview of Ritalin LA Uses

Ritalin LA^® (methylphenidate extended-release) is a prescription medicine that has been licensed to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

ADHD is a condition involving difficulty paying attention, sitting still, and controlling behavior. With ADHD, these problems are worse than expected for a typical child of the same age. Usually, these symptoms must be present before the age of seven to qualify as ADHD. The symptoms must also affect school, work, or social life in a negative way (see ADHD and School and Relationships and ADHD for more information).

Although ADHD is generally thought of as a problem in children, teenagers and adults can also have it. However, the process used to diagnose the condition in adults is different from the process to diagnose it in children.

Ritalin LA has been shown in clinical trials to help children with ADHD. The medication can help them sit still and pay attention in the classroom and can also help to improve behavior. The medication is not approved for use in adults or teenagers (see Ritalin LA for Adults and Teens and Adult ADHD for more information).

Any behavioral change involves a well-balanced ADHD treatment plan, including social, educational, and mental therapy (see Behavior Therapy for ADHD). If lifestyle changes alone are not effective in changing behavior, ADHD medications (such as Ritalin LA) may be necessary.
