Ritalin Interactions
When certain medications are taken with Ritalin, interactions between the drugs may develop. These potentially negative interactions can increase the levels of medicine in your blood and lead to serious side effects, such as extremely high blood pressure, increased heart rate, or bleeding. Medications that may cause Ritalin interactions include tricyclic antidepressants, warfarin, and seizure medications.
Ritalin® (methylphenidate hydrochloride) can potentially interact with many drugs. Some of the drugs that may lead to Ritalin interactions include:
- Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), including:
- Isocarboxazid (Marplan®)
- Phenelzine (Nardil®)
- Rasagiline (Azilect®)
- Selegiline (Eldepryl®, Emsam®, Zelapar®)
- Tranylcypromine (Parnate®)
- Pressors (medications to increase blood pressure), including:
- Dopamine (Intropin®)
- Dobutamine (Dobutrex®)
- Epinephrine (Adrenalin®, EpiPen®)
- Norepinephrine (Levophed®)
- Seizure medications, such as:
- Tricyclic antidepressants, including:
- Amitriptyline (Elavil®)
- Amoxapine (Asendin®)
- Clomipramine (Anafranil®)
- Doxepin (Sinequan®, Silenor®)
- Imipramine (Tofranil®)
- Desipramine (Norpramin®)
- Nortriptyline (Pamelor®)
- Protriptyline (Vivactil®)
- Trimipramine (Surmontil®)
