Ritalin® (
methylphenidate hydrochloride) is approved for the treatment of two different conditions:
narcolepsy and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Most people tolerate this medication well, and if any problems occur, they are usually mild and easily treated. However, there are some important safety issues with Ritalin to be aware of before beginning treatment.
For example, Ritalin can make certain pre-existing medical conditions worse, such as
schizophrenia,
congestive heart failure, and
high blood pressure, and more careful monitoring may be required. In addition, side effects are possible with this medication -- ranging from common, relatively mild ones (nausea, drowsiness, loss of appetite) to potentially dangerous ones (
seizures, hallucinations, allergic reactions).
In order to ensure effective, safe treatment with Ritalin, you need to tell your healthcare provider about any other medical conditions you have, as well as any other drugs you are taking -- including nonprescription and herbal products.
