People with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (
ADHD) may be prescribed
Strattera® (
atomoxetine hydrochloride). This is the first nonstimulant medication approved for the treatment of this condition, which is characterized by an inability to sit still and pay attention, as well as behavioral problems. It comes in the form of a capsule that is taken once or twice a day.
When used to treat ADHD, Strattera is believed to work by affecting the levels of norepinephrine in the brain. The drug's exact mechanism is unknown, but it may cause norepinephrine levels to increase, which in turn relieves ADHD symptoms.
This medicine also has been proven effective for people with
Tourette syndrome and certain
anxiety disorders, possibly for the same reasons that make Strattera effective for ADHD. It should not be used in children younger than six years old.
